EASY CHECKS FOR THE 496REB PUMP REPAIR KIT

(ALSO FOR OLD BRAVO AND 496 NOT DAMAGED)

1) ALL BELT DRIVED PUMPS ARE SUCKING AIR TO GET         WATER DOWN A LONG HOSE.  (REV THE MOTOR         HIGH IN THE FIRST START TO PRIME THE PUMP         AND GET THE IMPELLER WET)

2)  CHECK FOR AIR LEAKS WHICH LIMIT WATER.

(AIR IS EASIER TO PUMP, SO, AIR LEAKS WILL

PREVENT SUCKING WATER UP TO THE PUMP

LIKE A HOLE CENTER OF A STRAW IN A SODA.)

3)  WITH THE DRIVE UP, PUT YOUR GARDEN HOSE INTO         THE TRANSOM HOSE TO THE PUMP AND RUN FULL         OPEN BACKWARD TOWARD THE DRIVE.

4)  THE OPTIMUM RESULT SHOULD BE A LARGE         VOLUME OF WATER FROM THE INPUT SCREENS OF         THE OUTDRIVE,

NOTE: NO WATER LEAKING FROM THE HOSE OR         INSIDE THE OUTER TRANSOM PLATE ALLOWED.         ANY  LEAKING WATER WILL BE AN AIR LEAK WITH         THE  PUMP SUCKING DURING THE OPERATION.

5)  FREE FLOW CHECK:  WITH THE TRANSOM HOSE         REMOVED FROM THE PUMP INPUT, AND JUST         HANGING IN THE BILGE, PUT THE FLUSHETTE ON         THE DRIVE AND FULL VOLUME.  THE WATER         FALLING INTO THE BILGE AREA SHOULD BE MORE         NEEDED TO COOL THE ENGINE, OR IF NOT THE         TRANSOM HOSE OR PASSAGE IS CLOGGED.

6)   BACK FLOW CHECK;   WITH THE OUTPUT HOSE         FROM THE PUMP DISCONECTED,  PUT THE         GARDEN HOSE INTO THE THERMOSTAT HSE WITH         FULL FLOW, THE HOSE IN THE BILGE SHOULD         FLOW FREELY.  THIS CHECKS FOR CLOGGED OIL         COOLERS.

7) ELBOW CLEAR CHECK;  RUN THE GARDEN HOSE         THRU EACH MANIFOLD/ELBOW COMBO AND         CHECK THAT THE WATER FLOWS FREE WITHOUT         BACK  PRESSURE, IF ELBOW IS RESTRICTED THE         WATER  HOSE WILL SWELL AND PRESSURE UP.

8)  FLOW CHECK;  WITH THE OUTPUT HOSE FROM THE         PUMP DISCONNECTED, PUT THE INPUT HOSE         FROM THE TRANSOM INTO A WATER BUCKET AND         SEE HOW  LONG IT WILL TAKE IT TO PUMP IT         EMPTY.

9)  THESE CHECKS SHOULD EXPOSE THE FAILURE IN         THE PUMP SYSTEM.  IF YOU ARE WORKING ON THE         OLDER BRAVO WITH THE 5/8" SHAFT AND THE         SINGLE FLAT IN THE IMPELLER. THE IM3909H KIT         WILL FIX THE PUMP. IF YOU HAVE THE NEWER         GEN SEVEN SOLID BRASS PUMP WITH THE 1/2"         SHAFT WITH THE DOUBLE FLAT IN THE IMPELLER         THEN  THE 496 REPAIR KIT WILL FIX THE BROKEN         IMPELLER.  IN THE CHANCE THAT SAND BECAME         TRAPPED IN THE EDGES OF THE IMPELLER THE         BRASS SIDES OF THE PUMP MAY BE SWIRL CUT         AND DAMAGED IN WHICH TIME THE ORIGINAL         REPAIR KIT WILL NOT PRODUCE GOOD PRESSURE         IN THE PUMP, A SPECIAL REPAIR KIT IM496REB         WILL COMPLETELY FIX THE PUMP AND PRODUCE         HIGH PRESSURE AND VOLUME.  IF DURING THE         FLOW CHECKS YOU FIND THE FLOW THROUGH         THE HOSE TO THE TRANSOM PLATE FROM THE         BELL HOUSING IS A PROBLEM YOU COULD         BE "BRAVOITIS" WHICH IS A SALT OR CORROSION         BUILT UP OUTSIDE THE HOSE AS IT PASSES         THROUGH THE TRANSOM PLATE WHICH         ACTUALLY CRUSHES THE SUPPLY HOSE AND         STARVES THE WATER PUMP.  WE HAVE         DEVELOPED  A S.S. KIT WHICH FIXES THIS         PROBLEM AND IT IS IM654 KIT.

ALL BELT DRIVEN PUMPS ARE IN DANGER

IF THE WATER IS LIMITED IN YOUR PUMP         INITIAL  SUPPLY  START WATER SUPPLY OR         LIMITED OF  FREE FLOW.

IF AN IMPELLER LOOSES BLADES  WITH NO         REASON, CLEAR FLOW MUST BE  CHECKED.

START YOUR ENGINE REVED HIGH TO BE SURE         THE PUMP GETS INITIAL PRIME, THEN YOU CAN         IDLE THE MOTOR DOWN.

THE INPUT OR OUTPUT WATER WHICH IS LIMITED         TO A SLOW FLOW OR LACK OF COLD WATER WILL         BOIL THE RUBBER IMPELLER AND CAUSE EARLY         RUBBER FAILURE
